Discover nature at its purest form on the “Tsitsikamma Woodcutters Journey”
Experience the uniqueness of this biome on a journey down the old Stormsriver Pass through the indigenous Tsitsikamma forest from the comfort of a specially-designed vehicle. Follow the elephant migratory route, passing yellowwoods, and stinkwoods, while learning about the history of the area and its indigenous fauna and flora. We introduce you to a fairy world of a 450-500-year-old, “Human-like Tree”, our own unique “Forest Guard” who watch over the forest with human-like faces.
We take you back centuries ago, observed silently by giant trees, gently nodding their green heads in the soft Tsitsikamma breeze. The tour takes place in a pristine wilderness environment carefully selected for its uniqueness and unsurpassed beauty allowing clients to absorb the beauty of the indigenous forest. Information is presented by trained professional guides explaining culture, fauna, and flora such as the Knob Wood tree originally used for toothache by the Khoisan, identifying plants such as the “Bushman’s bedding” which was used as a natural insect repellent. The unique Khoi word “TSITSIKAMMA” which means “place of many waters”. Bird sounds such as the Fish Eagle’s call and the shy Narina Trogon add value to the customer experience especially when these birds are visible.
The historical Stone building was used as a hunting lodge and meeting place for hunters and is one of the oldest buildings in Stormsriver. The Woodcutters Journey ensures a personal experience standing next to a giant Hard Pear tree feeling like a dwarf by this unique creation. You will encounter beautiful Tree Ferns hundreds of years old. Guides deliver extensive narration to clients throughout the whole tour.
Enjoy a delicious snack at a beautiful picnic site next to the Stormsriver, where wagons outspanned more than a century ago.
Experience our 450-500-year-old "FOREST GUARD" sleeping during day time and ready to guard the forest at night.
You will be amazed! The “Human Tree” is a Hardpear tree; these trees can get up to 800 years old!
The Tsitsikamma indigenous forest takes you back to a time where the forest was "home" to hunter-gatherers and their existence in the forest. Discover how the forest lives and breathe the sounds of birds like the Knysna Loerie and Green-Wood hoopoes.
